Article – Dreamfields Low Carb Pasta and Carb Blockers

June 20th, 2009 by admin

Dreamfields Pasta and Carb Blocker pills are two popular approaches to limiting carbs in one’s diet. It is interesting that they share similar concepts towards weight control, though the mechanism that each employs is different. This article provides information about these two popular diet products as well as reviews the similarities and differences. The best aspects of each are analyzed in this review.

Blocking Carbs

The shared weight loss idea that both Dreamfield’s pasta and carb blockers adhere to is to block the digestion of carbs. Not only does blocking carbs reduce the number of calories in a particular meal, it also reduces the impact on blood sugar levels. This is an important concept in many popular diets such as Nutrisystems, South Beach, and The ZONE just to name a few.

Blood Sugar and Glycemic Index

Foods with less impact on blood sugar are often referred to as low glycemic foods. The glycemic index is a scale of how quickly foods get converted to blood sugar. Keeping blood sugar levels steady is an important part of many weight loss plans. Steady bloody sugar controls appetite, prevents cravings, and helps regulate metabolism and fat burning. Spikes in blood sugar will trigger your body to convert blood sugar into fat.

Good Carbs and Bad Carbs

Foods like white bread and potatoes have a high glycemic index because they are easily and quickly converted to blood sugar during digestion. These are sometimes referred to as bad carbs. Good carbs are low glycemic foods. These foods have various properties that slow down the conversion of carbs to blood sugar. Often the good carbs are bound with fiber, protein, and/or fat that works to slow down or block digestion of the carbs.

Dreamfields Pasta approach

The approach that Dreamfields pasta takes to block carbs is to bind the carbs up even tighter with fiber. In Dreamfields pasta the carbs are just tougher to breakdown and digest. Most of the carbs pass through digestion without having a chance to be released into the blood stream. This is beneficial to diets because there are less calories and because there is less impact on blood sugar. Dreamfields claims that a clinical study reports that their pasta has 65% less impact on blood sugar than regular pasta.

Carb Blocker Pill approach

The Carb Blocker pill approach is to instead of making the carbs tougher to digest, it makes certain key digestive enzymes less effective at carrying out the digestion of carbs. There are specific enzymes produced by the pancreas designed to convert carbs to blood sugar, and Carb Blocker pills use an all-natural, concentrated extract from white kidney beans to neutralize these key enzymes. It is the same idea as using an antacid to neutralize stomach acid, but in this case the neutralizing agent works on carb digesting enzymes. This extract, called phaseolamin or “Phase 2″ has been clinically proven to aid weight loss and reduce glycemic index of foods.

Which Works Best

Dreamfields pasta and carb blocker pills with Phase 2 achieve the same effect of less digestion of carbs and less impact on blood sugar levels. Which works best may vary from individual to individual. The advantage to carb blockers is that carbs can be blocked in all types of foods whereas Dreamfields is specific to pasta. Because they each employ two different methods, it gives one different options to try in case the other is not as effective for them personally, for whatever reason (personally I go overboard whenever I eat pasta).

The effectiveness of each will be limited to a certain extent, so one cannot go overboard consuming carbs with either if the goal is to lose weight. Dreamfields pasta will start to lose its effectiveness if it is over-cooked, and may also be affected by such factors as how long one stores leftovers, what kind of sauce is used, what is drank with it, et cetera. The carb blocker pills with Phase 2 will reduce the carbs digested, but what percentage could vary depending on various factors.

A good way to look at is that these diet products can turn bad carbs into good carbs.

Review - Dreamfields Low Carb Pasta

June 19th, 2009 by admin

Dreamfields Pasta Overview

Dreamfield’s is a popular low carb pasta option marketed to those following a low carb diet and to those with diabetes. Dreamfields uses a particular manufacturing process where the carbs normally found in traditional pasta are “protected” so that they cannot be as easily digested.

The end result is that the carbs are blocked, and less make their way into the blood stream leading to less of a spike in blood sugar levels. This is primary goal of most low carb and “good carb” diets – to limit spikes in the blood sugar. The added benefit of undigested carbs is that less carbs mean less calories as well.

The Good

  • Dreamfields does taste good and for many people is indistinguishable in taste from regular pasta, unlike other options such as whole wheat pasta.

  • It has twice the soluble fiber as regular pasta. Soluble fiber is the same type found in oatmeal and helps to control cholesterol among other benefits to a healthy diet.

  • A clinical study showed that Dreamfield’s pasta had a glycemic index 65% lower than regular pasta. This means that the impact on blood sugar was 65% lower; this is very good news for diabetics and low carb / good carb dieters.

The Questions

  • It is not clear if other studies support or dispute Dreamfields claim of a 65% lower glycemic index, what methodology was used, and how close to real world situation was studied. An independent review of the studies would be nice.

  • It is not clear what factors affect the “protection” of the carbs from digestion. Dreamfield’s box says not to overcook. Does overcooking release more carbs? Does mixing it with spaghetti sauce and storing the leftovers for a few days release more of the carbs? How protected are the carbs from these real world occurrences?

Other options to Review

  • Fortified Pasta – (like Barilla Plus) fortified with extra protein, fiber, and omega 3, which will all help lower the glycemic index and displace carbs that will otherwise be converted to sugar

  • Whole wheat pasta – more fiber will lower the glycemic index and displace carbs that will otherwise be converted to sugar

  • Carb Blocker Pills – use plant extracts (often called “Phase 2″) to counteract key digestive enzymes, blocking the digestion of carbs. It can be used for all kinds of foods, not just pasta. It is a similar concept to taking Beano or Rolaids to counteract whatever is going on in your digestive system.

Carb Blocker Pills

Carb blocker pills, such as Dietrine, use a concentrated extract from white kidney beans (Phase 2 - Phaseolamin) to counteract a key digestive enzyme produced in the pancreas. When the enzyme is neutralized in your intestines, then the carbs go undigested. It is a similar concept to using an antacid to counteract stomach acid and seems to be a good alternative to review, especially if on a diet.

Stopping the digestion of carbs is the same concept as in Dreamfield’s pasta, but the carb blocker diet pills take a different approach. Dreamfield’s approach is to bind the carbs up with fiber and other elements to “protect” the carbs. The carb blockers on the other hand counteract certain digestive enzymes before they have a chance to breakdown the carbs.

The advantage to the carb blocker pills is that you are not just limited to pasta, you can limit the digestion of carbs in all kinds of food. Dreamfields low carb pasta and carb blocker pills are discussed more in another article.

June 19th, 2009 by admin

Dreamfields has created a low carb pasta that can be very beneficial for low carb diet plans and weight loss in general. Dreamfields low carb pasta tastes just like regular pasta, and it can be a good way to allow pasta on low carb diet plans and others as well. The key is not to overdue it and still eat in moderation even though it is low carb. Breakthrough - Buy the Carb Blocker Pill with Phase 2

June 19th, 2009 by admin

A large number of people have determined that low carb or “good carb” diets are the best way to lose weight, but now you can get the same results in a pill. Buy the Dietrine Carb Blocker Pill with Phase 2 to get the same benefits of a low carb diet while enjoying more of your “bad carb” foods like bread and pasta.

Low Carb / Good Carb Dieting

Many of the most popular diets today such as Nutrisystems, South Beach, and The Zone all emphasize “good carbs.” These are carbs that get converted to blood sugar more slowly. Now there is simple and convenient way to turn all carbs, even bad carbs, into good carbs through the use of this innovative carb pill with Phase 2.

Phase 2

Buy the Dietrine Carb Block Pill with Phase 2 to block your body’s ability to break down carbs using a safe extract from the white kidney bean. This extract neutralizes a key digestive enzyme produced by the pancreas that is essential in breaking down carbs. This extract, called “Phase 2″ or Phaseolamin, has been clinically proven to lower the glycemic index of food and to aid in weight loss. With this breakthrough diet pill, the carbs will pass through your system with a smaller portion of these actually being converted to blood sugar - all carbs become good carbs.

It is the same idea as taking an antacid to neutralize stomach acid. In this case though, you are neutralizing a carb-digesting enzyme.

Blocking Carbs is Well Established

The Dietrine Carb Blocker Pill with Phase 2 / Phaseolamin is a breakthrough, innovative approach to slowing down digestion of bad carbs, but the idea of blocking carbs is well established. Traditionally, “good carb foods” are those such as beans where factors such as fiber and protein help to slow down the digestion of carbs. In the case of fiber, it tends to form a protective shell that makes the carbs harder to digest. There is even a popular “low carb” pasta product made by Dreamfields where they process the pasta in such a way just to make it harder to digest.

New Approach to Blocking Carbs

So the concept of blocking digestion of carbs is well understood and appreciated, but now you can order and buy the Dietrine Carb Blocker Pill with Phase 2 to take a breakthrough, cutting edge approach. This diet pill counteracts specific digestive enzymes to block the digestion of carbs, and thus ANY bad carb food such as bread, rice, and pasta will get absorbed like it was a good carb. Same concept - brocolli is a good carb because the carbs are hard to digest - but now the innovative design of the carb blocking pill with Phase 2 extends this to any food you eat.

Clinically Proven Safe and Effective

The Dietrine Carb Blocker Pill is an all natural, perfectly safe diet pill made from the extract of white kidney beans (Phase 2 / Phaseolamin) and contains no harsh drugs or stimulants. As was stated above, it simply uses an innovative approach to proven concepts to help your body treat all carbs as good carbs. To read about the clinical trials showing that Phase 2 / Phaseolamin aided weight loss and lowered the glycemic index of foods, click here. News - French Diet Seeing More Child Obesity

June 19th, 2009 by admin

Cheese, pastries, foie gras — France’s culinary delights are full of dietary sins. Now child obesity is rising and the myth that French people can eat anything and stay thin is fading. So the Government is fighting back. Read more at The Age.

Some of have claimed that red wine is key to the “French Paradox,” so it is interesting that they are seeing problems in people not likely to be drinking red wine (children). The “French Paradox” though often talks about heart health instead of obesity, so it would be interesting if red wine helps control obesity as well. Others have stated that obesity is controlled in French women by eating small portions slowly and savoring their food, which again might not be something children would do.

News - Limiting fructose may boost weight loss

June 13th, 2009 by admin

One of the reasons people on low-carbohydrate diets may lose weight is that they reduce their intake of fructose, a type of sugar that can be made into body fat quickly, according to a researcher at UT Southwestern Medical Center. See the full news release from UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The study found that one type of sugar, fructose, gets converted to fat more quickly than the other types of sugars. High-fructose corn syrup is a common sweetner in many products. Paying attention to the types of sugars in food products while on a diet and avoiding those with fructose may be another way to help improve weight loss. The study found that even four hours after a high fructose drink was consumed, the body was more likely to store fat instead of burn it.

Review - Zone Diet

June 10th, 2009 by admin

The Zone Diet is a more strongly structured version of a “good carb” diet that has become popular lately such as the South Beach diet program. Like some of the these other good carb diets it focuses on low-fat protein, low glycemic carbs (“good carbs”), and heart-healthy fats to achieve weight loss as well as better overall health. The Zone Diet has more structure in that it requires a specific balance of protein, carbs, and fat (one gram of fat for every two grams of protein and three grams of carbohydrate.) The diet is very focused on what it attempts to achieve biochemically, including manipulating hormones involved metabolism. In addition, the Zone Diet strongly emphasizes fruits and vegetables for their specific nutrient contribution and anti-inflammatory properties (in particular polyphenols.) Overall all it has a very specific plan.

For those that prefer a more structured diet, this should be a good option. Also, those that want to strive for optimum nutrition and health based on current scientific research may find this diet program particularly interesting. The Zone Diet program does promote a healthy lifestyle that can be followed once the weight loss has been achieved. Those that want a simpler diet plan might not be interested though, and the diet program may be too involved for those that don’t want to have to balance the number of grams of protein, fat, and carbs each day (though various supplements, bar, shakes, etc.. are available to assist in this.)

Article - Rotation Diets

June 9th, 2009 by admin

Rotation diets shift around the types of food you eat day to day so that your body cannot adapt to your diet as easily. Some of these diets will shift the number of carbs you eat day to day, while others will shift the content of meals day to day (for example you might have a high-carb, low-fat breakfast for two days, then the next day it would be low-carb and moderate fat.)

The point of these is to prevent your body from adapting to your diet plan. Plateaus and “sticking points” where you stop losing weight are common problems in many weight loss programs that often require some kind of change-up to work through them, but Rotation diets have a change mechanism built in. Often even before you reach a “sticking point”, your body will start to burn fat less and less quickly as it adapts to what you eating, and rotation diets can prevent this slowdown as well. The constant change-up will make it harder for your body to realize that it is losing fat, and it will be less likely to respond by doing such things as slowing down your metabolism. Especially if your body thinks it is starving, it will do what it can to slow things down.

Rotation is a good weight loss principle no matter what diet you are on, and several diets make it the cornerstone of their program. The problem is that you still need to make sure that the rest of the diet plan is sound and will work well in conjunction with rotation. The advantage to specific Rotation diet plans is that that they will have a plan to follow if you are not good at figuring out how to do the rotation yourself.

Some of the more heavily advertised rotation-style diets are:

Carb Rotation Diet (this program tends to shift the number of carbs day to day)

Fat Loss 4 Idiots (this program mixes up your meals day to day, and has software to help plan the menu.)
